During a 12th-century samurai rebellion, warrior Endō Morito is assigned to protect the noblewoman Kesa, who has risked her life impersonating her lord's sister to help the real family escape. Having fallen obsessively in love with Kesa during their ordeal, Morito is devastated to learn she is already married, and demands from his lord the one reward he desires: her hand. Teinosuke Kinugasa's film, Japan's first color feature shown internationally, follows Morito's dangerous fixation as it threatens to destroy Kesa's marriage and both their lives.
