Marty Piletti, a good-natured but lonely 34-year-old Bronx butcher, is constantly pressured by his mother and friends to find a wife, having resigned himself to bachelorhood after years of romantic disappointment. At a dance hall one Saturday night, he meets Clara, a plain, socially awkward schoolteacher freshly abandoned by her blind date, and the two spend an unexpectedly tender evening together. Delbert Mann's intimate drama follows Marty's struggle to defy his friends' mockery and his own self-doubt to pursue the one connection that finally feels genuine.
