Jacques Cousteau and his crew aboard the research vessel Calypso spend two years diving through the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean, capturing some of the first color underwater footage of marine life ever filmed. The documentary marvels at coral reefs, shipwrecks, and exotic sea creatures while also candidly showing the crew's own rough treatment of the ocean they're documenting, including a shark cull and the use of dynamite to survey a reef. Co-directed by Cousteau and a young Louis Malle, the film became the first documentary ever to win the Palme d'Or.
