Jess Birdwell, a Quaker farmer in Civil War-era Indiana, balances his pacifist faith with a private love of music and horse racing, while his devout wife Eliza holds firmly to their community's peace testimony. As the war closes in and armed raiders threaten their region, the Birdwell family is torn between their religious convictions and the pull to defend their home and each other. William Wyler's drama follows each family member's individual reckoning with violence, testing whether faith can survive contact with war.
