Setting the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice amid the samba and Carnaval festivities of a Rio de Janeiro favela, the film follows trolley driver Orfeu, engaged to the fiery Mira, as he falls instantly for newcomer Eurydice, who is being stalked by a mysterious figure representing Death. Their brief, ecstatic romance unfolds against the exuberant chaos of Carnaval, even as Eurydice's pursuer closes in with tragic inevitability. Marcel Camus's film, propelled by a landmark bossa nova soundtrack, transforms ancient tragedy into vibrant, doomed celebration.
