Tabloid journalist Marcello Rubini drifts through seven days and nights of Rome's high society, chasing celebrity gossip, fleeting romances, and his own vague ambitions to be a serious writer, without ever finding real satisfaction in any of it. His restless search for meaning takes him from a starlet's midnight dip in the Trevi Fountain to his father's awkward visit to a decadent aristocratic party, each episode leaving him a little more disillusioned and detached. Federico Fellini's episodic portrait ends with Marcello, numbed by indulgence, unable to even recognize an earlier symbol of innocence calling to him from across a beach.
