In 1860s Sicily, aging aristocrat Don Fabrizio Corbera watches the old feudal order crumble as Garibaldi's revolutionary redshirts sweep through the island, forcing the nobility to adapt or fade into irrelevance. His opportunistic nephew Tancredi joins the insurgents while courting the beautiful, socially ambitious Angelica, a match Don Fabrizio encourages as a pragmatic union of old aristocracy and new money. Luchino Visconti's epic frames Sicily's political upheaval through the Prince's own resigned awareness that his class's power is ending, embodied in the film's famous, elegiac ballroom sequence.
