In the French coastal town of Cherbourg, young lovers Geneviève and Guy are separated when Guy is drafted into the Algerian War, leaving Geneviève pregnant and increasingly pressured by her mother to accept marriage to a wealthy, kind jeweler instead. Jacques Demy's film, with every line of dialogue sung to Michel Legrand's score, follows the couple through years of diverging paths, chance reunions, and quietly heartbreaking compromises neither fully wanted. Their eventual reunion, years later and each now married to someone else, plays out with wistful restraint rather than melodrama.
