At the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War, new surgeons "Hawkeye" Pierce and "Duke" Forrest arrive as insubordinate, irreverent troublemakers who nonetheless prove to be brilliant combat surgeons. Robert Altman follows the unit's chaotic mix of black comedy and gruesome operating-room reality, with pranks aimed at the self-righteous Major "Hot Lips" Houlihan and her lover Frank Burns providing much of the mayhem. Beneath its Korean War setting, the film's anarchic tone doubles as commentary on the ongoing war in Vietnam.
