Successful novelist Giovanni Pontano and his emotionally distant wife Lidia drift through a single day and night in Milan after visiting a dying friend in the hospital, moving from a chaotic book party to a wealthy industrialist's late-night gathering. Both quietly pursue and are pursued by others—Giovanni by a hospital patient and later a young woman at the party, Lidia by a former admirer—while their own marriage grows more hollow with each passing hour. Michelangelo Antonioni's drifting, plotless structure brings the couple's mutual alienation fully into view by dawn.
