Max, a short-tempered ex-convict, and Lion, a childlike former sailor, meet on the road in California and agree to become business partners in a car wash once they reach Pittsburgh, with Lion detouring to Detroit to reconcile with the mother of the son he's never met. A stint in a prison farm and a brutal assault on Lion there test and ultimately deepen their bond, with Max becoming Lion's protector as their roles shift. When they finally reach Detroit, Lion learns the woman lied about even having his child, a blow that sends him into a breakdown Max can only watch helplessly.
