Harry Caul, an obsessively private surveillance expert, is hired to record a couple's conversation in a crowded San Francisco square, haunted by guilt over a past job whose recordings led to three deaths. As he pieces together the ambiguous tape, Harry becomes convinced the couple he recorded are now in danger from his own client, dragging him deeper into paranoia about what his work has set in motion. Francis Ford Coppola's thriller follows Harry's unraveling certainty about what he heard and what it means, until his obsession with privacy and guilt consumes him entirely.
