Vietnam veteran and chronic insomniac Travis Bickle takes a job driving a New York City cab through the night, growing more alienated and disgusted by the city's decay as his isolation deepens. His clumsy attempt at connection with campaign worker Betsy ends in humiliation, and his fixation on a child prostitute named Iris curdles his loneliness into a violent need to "save" her by force. Martin Scorsese follows Travis's descent from detached observer to armed vigilante, climaxing in a bloody rescue attempt that the city, perversely, hails as heroism.
