During the Vietnam War, Captain Willard is sent on a secret mission up a river into Cambodia to find and assassinate Colonel Kurtz, a decorated Special Forces officer who has gone rogue and established himself as a godlike warlord among a private army. As Willard's boat journeys deeper upriver, the mission exposes him and his crew to the war's escalating absurdity and horror, from an air cavalry officer's operatic helicopter assault to a chaotic USO show. Loosely adapted from Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," the film turns Willard's journey into a descent into the war's, and his own, moral abyss.
