Joe Gideon, a workaholic director-choreographer modeled on Bob Fosse himself, burns through amphetamines and cigarettes while simultaneously staging an ambitious Broadway musical and editing a film about a stand-up comedian, all while narrating his own life to an imagined Angel of Death. As the strain of overwork, failed relationships, and self-destruction mounts, Joe's grip on reality slips into elaborate musical fantasy sequences that blur rehearsal, memory, and hallucination. The film builds to Joe's own staged, fantastical death, framed as the final show he choreographs for himself.
