In feudal Japan, the dying warlord Takeda Shingen orders his clan to conceal his death and use a petty thief who closely resembles him as a decoy to deter rival lords. The thief is trained to impersonate Shingen convincingly enough to fool allies and enemies alike, gradually growing into the role. When he is exposed after falling from Shingen's horse, revealing he lacks the warlord's battle scars, he is cast out in disgrace. The film ends with the catastrophic Battle of Nagashino, where the Takeda cavalry is destroyed by Oda Nobunaga's riflemen.
