After a military coup in an unnamed South American country (based on Chile), American journalist Charles Horman disappears. His conservative father Ed travels there and, together with Charles's wife Beth, tries to track him down. Their search reveals that the U.S. embassy is stonewalling them and that American officials quietly supported the coup that toppled the elected government. Ed eventually learns that Charles was executed by the junta with the knowledge of U.S. officials, and returns home only after his son's body is finally released.
