In Tito's Yugoslavia in 1950, six-year-old Malik cannot understand why his father Meša, a Communist official, has suddenly been sent away. In truth, Meša has been informed on by his own brother-in-law over an indiscreet remark about a political cartoon and is serving time in a labor camp. Once the family is allowed to join him near his camp, Malik develops a childhood romance with a local girl while gradually witnessing his father's infidelity and the strained ties within his own family. The story unfolds entirely through Malik's uncomprehending, matter-of-fact perspective on the adult world around him.
