Donissan, a newly ordained and self-doubting priest in rural northern France, is convinced he can see directly into the souls of his parishioners. He confronts a young woman, Mouchette, who has murdered her lover, telling her he can perceive her sin; she takes her own life soon after. Donissan goes on to be revered as a holy man capable of miracles, including reviving a dead child, but the toll of his spiritual torment steadily destroys his health. He is ultimately found dead in his confessional by the mentor who first guided him.
