Two wounded gangsters, fleeing a botched robbery, take refuge in the remote tidal-island castle of a neurotic Englishman, George, and his young, restless French wife, Teresa, holding the couple hostage while awaiting rescue. As one gangster dies of his wounds and the other settles in to wait, the power dynamics among the four twist into uneasy alliances, drunken camaraderie, and simmering sexual tension. Roman Polanski's black comedy escalates toward violence once the castle's isolation is broken by a group of George's oblivious houseguests.
