In Berlin's opulent Grand Hotel, the lives of a disillusioned war veteran doctor, a fading ballerina contemplating suicide, a charming but penniless baron moonlighting as a jewel thief, a dying accountant determined to spend his savings on one final taste of luxury, and a ruthless industrialist all intersect over a single fateful stay. As the baron's romance with the ballerina and his fraught friendship with the dying accountant develop alongside the industrialist's scheming, the hotel's revolving door of guests briefly collides before scattering back into their separate fates. Edmund Goulding's all-star ensemble drama, built around Greta Garbo's iconic "I want to be alone," remains the only film to win Best Picture without any other nomination.
