Pampered heiress Ellie Andrews flees her controlling father's yacht to reunite with the fortune-hunting playboy she's secretly married, and ends up sharing a Greyhound bus seat, and eventually a room, with Peter Warne, a wisecracking, recently fired reporter who recognizes her and senses a career-making scoop. Forced by circumstance into a cross-country journey together, the mismatched pair's mutual antagonism gradually thaws into real affection, even as Peter keeps his professional interest in her story secret. Frank Capra's screwball romance, built on the crackling chemistry between Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, became the first film to sweep the Academy's five biggest awards.
