French author Émile Zola rises from bohemian struggle alongside his painter friend Paul Cézanne to literary fame with his unflinching novels exposing social injustice, building a reputation as a fearless truth-teller. When Captain Alfred Dreyfus is wrongly convicted of treason in a scandal steeped in antisemitism, the aging, comfortable Zola risks his reputation and freedom by publishing "J'Accuse," a public letter demanding justice for Dreyfus regardless of the personal cost. William Dieterle's biographical drama frames Zola's late-life courage in defending Dreyfus as the culmination of a career built on refusing to look away from injustice.
