Headstrong Georgia belle Scarlett O'Hara pines for the gentle, married Ashley Wilkes while the Civil War devastates the antebellum South she's grown up in, and gradually builds a fraught, passionate relationship with the roguish blockade-runner Rhett Butler, who sees through her manipulations yet loves her anyway. As Scarlett fights to save her family's plantation Tara through war, Reconstruction, and personal tragedy, her relentless self-interest and inability to let go of Ashley repeatedly poison her chance at happiness with Rhett. Victor Fleming's sweeping epic follows Scarlett's ruthless survival instincts across the ruins of the Old South, ending with one of cinema's most famous refusals of a happy ending.
