Rick Blaine, a cynical American expatriate running a nightclub in Vichy-controlled Casablanca, is forced to confront his buried feelings when his former lover Ilsa arrives seeking exit visas for herself and her husband, a celebrated Czech resistance leader fleeing the Nazis. As Rick navigates corrupt officials, black-market dealings, and his own wounded pride, he must decide whether to help Ilsa's husband escape or keep her for himself. Michael Curtiz's wartime romance builds to Rick's legendary act of self-sacrifice at a fog-shrouded airport, choosing the greater cause over his own heartbreak.
