Widowed journalist Phil Green, assigned to write a magazine exposé on antisemitism in New York and its wealthy suburbs, decides the only way to truly understand the subject is to pose as Jewish himself, and is stunned by the casual bigotry he encounters from colleagues, neighbors, and even his own fiancée. As his fake identity exposes uncomfortable truths about supposedly liberal, tolerant society, Phil's relationship with his fiancée Kathy is tested by her own unexamined prejudices. Elia Kazan's drama confronts genteel, "polite" antisemitism as a form of complicity every bit as damaging as open hatred.
