In occupied postwar Vienna, an international four-power military patrol—American, British, French, and Soviet soldiers riding together in one jeep—is drawn into the case of an Austrian man who has escaped Soviet captivity and his desperate wife. As the patrol debates whether to help the fugitive's wife, tensions between the occupying powers play out in miniature within the jeep itself. Leopold Lindtberg's drama uses the four soldiers' uneasy cooperation to dramatize the fractured, multilateral control of postwar Vienna, ending when the Soviet soldier chooses conscience over orders.
