The Apartment

1960 · Billy Wilder

C.C. "Bud" Baxter, a lonely insurance clerk, lends his Manhattan apartment to four philandering company managers in exchange for career favors, juggling their overlapping schedules while his own life stays empty. He falls for elevator operator Fran Kubelik, not realizing she's the mistress of Baxter's boss, the married personnel director Sheldrake, who also uses Baxter's apartment for their affair. Billy Wilder's bittersweet comedy follows Baxter's growing conscience as he chooses Fran's happiness over his own corporate advancement.
