In 1957 New York, two rival teenage gangs, the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks, feud for control of their Upper West Side turf, escalating toward a planned rumble. Tony, a Jets co-founder trying to leave gang life behind, falls instantly in love with Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo, at a neighborhood dance, igniting a forbidden romance that mirrors Romeo and Juliet. As tensions boil over into the rumble, the lovers' hopes for a life together collide fatally with the gangs' spiraling violence.
