Phonetics professor Henry Higgins wagers that he can transform Cockney flower-seller Eliza Doolittle into a woman who can pass as a duchess simply by teaching her to speak proper English, taking her on as a live-in student and social experiment. As Eliza masters her diction and grace and triumphs at a high-society ball, she also begins to demand the respect and independence Higgins never intended to give her. The musical follows Eliza's transformation curdling into a battle over who she truly belongs to, herself or her creator.
