Maria, a free-spirited postulant unsuited to convent life, is sent to serve as governess to the seven children of widowed naval Captain Georg von Trapp in Salzburg, winning them over with music after their father's strict, joyless household. Maria and the Captain fall in love and marry, but their happiness is threatened as Austria is annexed by Nazi Germany and the Captain is ordered to serve in the German navy. Robert Wise's musical follows the von Trapp family's dramatic escape over the mountains into Switzerland rather than submit to the Nazi regime.
