Sir Thomas More, Lord Chancellor of England, refuses on principle to endorse King Henry VIII's annulment from Catherine of Aragon or swear the Oath of Supremacy declaring Henry head of the Church of England. As former allies and even his own family urge him toward a compromise that would save his career and his life, More holds to his conscience with quiet, unshakable resolve, even as the political cost mounts against him. Fred Zinnemann's drama follows More's principled stand to its inevitable, tragic conclusion at the hands of a king who will not tolerate dissent.
