In 1938 Ferrara, the wealthy Jewish Finzi-Contini family opens their walled estate to friends of their children Micòl and Alberto after Jews are banned from the city's tennis club. Giorgio, a Jewish businessman's son, has loved Micòl since adolescence, but she stays distant and eventually takes up with his gentile friend Giampiero instead. As Mussolini's racial laws tighten and war approaches, Giorgio drifts away from the family while Micòl clings to their insulated privilege. When Italy's Jews are rounded up in 1943, the Finzi-Continis are arrested together, and a last fleeting reunion between Giorgio and Micòl ends with their fates left uncertain.
