Orphaned boy Oliver Twist is sold into apprenticeship from a brutal workhouse and eventually runs away to London, where he falls in with a gang of child pickpockets led by the wily Fagin and his menacing associate, Bill Sikes. Oliver finds unexpected kindness from Nancy, Sikes's mistreated girlfriend, and from a wealthy gentleman who takes him in, only for Fagin's gang to drag him back into danger. Carol Reed's musical adaptation of Dickens follows Oliver's journey from institutional cruelty toward a rescue that costs Nancy her life.
