Naive Texan Joe Buck moves to New York City dressed as a cowboy, hoping to make his fortune as a male prostitute for wealthy women, but finds the city colder and less profitable than he imagined. He falls in with Rico "Ratso" Rizzo, a sickly, scheming con man, and the two form an unlikely, increasingly tender friendship as they scrape by together in a condemned apartment. John Schlesinger's film follows their bond toward a bittersweet journey to Florida that Ratso's declining health may not let him survive.
