As the aging patriarch Vito Corleone survives an assassination attempt, his reluctant youngest son Michael, a decorated war veteran who wanted no part of the family business, is drawn into the Corleone crime family's brutal world of loyalty and vengeance. Michael's calculated rise from outsider to ruthless Mafia boss unfolds against a backdrop of gang warfare among New York's crime families, marked by betrayals, assassinations, and a baptism intercut with a wave of coordinated killings. By the film's end, Michael has consolidated power completely, becoming the very thing he once swore he wouldn't.
