In 1936, grifter Johnny Hooker teams up with veteran con man Henry Gondorff after a job leaves his partner dead at the hands of ruthless crime boss Doyle Lonnegan. Seeking revenge, they assemble a crew of fellow grifters to run an elaborate "big con" on Lonnegan, building a fake off-track betting parlor to fleece him out of a fortune. George Roy Hill's Depression-era caper builds through misdirection after misdirection toward a final double-cross that outwits both Lonnegan and the audience.
