The film interweaves two parallel stories: in 1958, Michael Corleone, now the Corleone family's Don, ruthlessly consolidates power and defends against an assassination attempt, growing more isolated and paranoid even as his empire expands into Cuba and Nevada; in flashback, young Vito Corleone flees Sicily as a boy after his family is murdered and builds his own criminal empire from nothing in early-1900s New York. Vito's rise is shown as one of loyalty and family, while Michael's parallel ascent becomes one of betrayal and loneliness, culminating in the destruction of his own family bonds.
