Randle McMurphy, a con man who fakes insanity to serve his sentence in a mental institution rather than a prison work farm, clashes immediately with the ward's controlling, punitive head nurse, Ratched. McMurphy's rebellious energy inspires the other patients to reclaim small freedoms, from a covert fishing trip to a late-night party, but his defiance draws escalating retaliation from the hospital's authority. The confrontation between McMurphy and Ratched ends in tragedy, with McMurphy lobotomized into a vegetative state and a fellow patient, Chief Bromden, finally escaping the institution in his place.
