Three Russian-American steelworkers from a Pennsylvania mill town, close friends since childhood, ship off to fight in the Vietnam War shortly after one of their weddings. Captured together, they're forced by their captors into a brutal game of Russian roulette for the amusement of their captors, an ordeal that leaves each of them irrevocably changed once they return home, unable to fully reclaim the lives and friendships they left behind. Michael Cimino's film frames the war's psychological devastation through the lens of a tight-knit community forever fractured by what its sons endured.
