After the accidental drowning death of their older son and the younger son Conrad's subsequent suicide attempt, an affluent Illinois family struggles to hold itself together. Conrad works through his guilt and trauma with a psychiatrist while his mother Beth clings to appearances rather than confronting her grief, growing cold toward her surviving son. As Conrad slowly heals and his father Calvin tries to bridge the gap between them, the emotional distance between Calvin and Beth widens until it fractures the family.
