The film traces the life of Mohandas Gandhi, beginning with his transformation from a young lawyer facing racial discrimination in South Africa into a leader of nonviolent resistance. Returning to India, he rises within the independence movement and leads campaigns of civil disobedience against British rule, including the famous Salt March, enduring repeated imprisonment along the way. After India gains independence in 1947, Gandhi works to quell the sectarian violence between Hindus and Muslims that follows partition, fasting for peace before his assassination in 1948.
