Over the years, headstrong widow Aurora Greenway and her daughter Emma maintain a close but often contentious relationship as Emma marries against her mother's wishes and raises a family with her unfaithful husband Flap. Aurora finally opens herself to romance with her brash neighbor, a retired astronaut, while Emma finds comfort with a sympathetic bank manager as her marriage crumbles. When Emma is diagnosed with terminal cancer, mother and daughter reconcile and Aurora prepares to care for her grandchildren.
