In 1967, naive young recruit Chris Taylor arrives in Vietnam and is caught between two sergeants with opposing philosophies: the ruthless, battle-hardened Barnes and the more compassionate Elias. As the brutality of the war escalates, including an atrocity committed against Vietnamese villagers, tensions between the two sergeants turn deadly when Barnes secretly kills Elias to protect himself from being exposed. During a chaotic final battle, Taylor kills Barnes in revenge, leaving the war's savagery permanently etched into him.
