Set in a Bengal village during World War II, the film follows young Brahmin doctor-teacher Gangacharan and his wife Angana as the Great Famine of 1943 slowly closes in around them. Satyajit Ray, shooting in colour for one of the first times in his career, traces the famine's effects through the small rhythms of village life rather than spectacle, watching traditional social and caste norms erode as hunger spreads. What begins as a story of quiet domestic routine becomes a portrait of a catastrophe that killed millions, rendered entirely at human scale.
