Duddy Kravitz, a brash young Jewish man from a poor Montreal family, schemes his way toward wealth and his grandfather's respect, first hustling at a Laurentian resort hotel and then setting his sights on buying up land around a lake with his girlfriend Yvette. He raises capital by filming weddings and bar mitzvahs and by drawing a disabled acquaintance, Virgil, into a smuggling scheme, ultimately forging Virgil's signature to close his final land purchase. Duddy gets the property and success he wanted, but the ruthlessness of his climb costs him Yvette, Virgil's trust, and his grandfather's blessing.
