During World War II, two Soviet partisans, Sotnikov and Rybak, are captured by German forces and local collaborators while searching for food in occupied Belarus. Under torture, Sotnikov gives up nothing, while Rybak tells his captors what he thinks they already know, hoping to buy time to escape, and is offered a job as a police collaborator instead. Sotnikov chooses execution rather than betrayal, and Rybak, left alive but consumed by guilt, is unable even to end his own life, watched by the villagers who now despise him.
