In medieval Sweden, devout farmer Töre sends his cherished daughter Karin to deliver candles to a distant church, accompanied by her resentful, pregnant servant Ingeri, who secretly still worships the old pagan gods. Alone in the forest, Karin is raped and murdered by a trio of goat herders, who unknowingly seek shelter that same night at her family's farm and try to sell her clothes to her own mother. Ingmar Bergman's stark tragedy follows Töre's brutal vengeance against the killers and his reckoning with his own faith when a spring miraculously wells up where his daughter died.
