Three loosely connected stories, each starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, follow couples across different regions of Italy: a poor Neapolitan black-market cigarette seller who exploits a legal loophole protecting pregnant women from prison by staying perpetually pregnant; a bored, wealthy Milanese housewife carrying on an affair with a lower-class writer; and a wealthy Roman call girl whose favorite client is a besotted young seminary student. Vittorio De Sica's anthology comedy uses each vignette to explore a different shade of Italian womanhood and desire, anchored by Loren and Mastroianni's shifting chemistry across all three, from social comedy to farce.
