During World War II in the Nazi-aligned Slovak Republic, mild-mannered carpenter Tóno Brtko is appointed "Aryan controller" of a small notions shop owned by elderly, nearly deaf Jewish widow Rozália Lautmannová, who barely understands what is happening to her. Tóno, unable to bring himself to exploit her, instead quietly supports the failing shop himself while hiding the truth of the Aryanization program from her. When Slovak Jews are ordered deported, Tóno faces an impossible choice between saving Rozália and protecting himself, with catastrophic consequences either way.
